The concept of refrigerant
Refrigerants are referred to the synthetic Freon. Another popular name of Freon is Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC).
Primary components of a refrigerator
Compressor is the most important component of a refrigerator and is equivalent to a heart. This particular device transports the refrigerant throughout the mechanism of the machine by applying pressure at the warm regions of a circuit.
The mesh of the wiring system that you find behind the refrigerator body is the condenser. As it is situated on the outer side of the main body, uncovered refrigerators are dusty and with time turn rusty. The primary work of it is to convert the gases into liquid. It keeps the refrigerant cool and condensed.
The horizontal mesh of wire located inside the refrigerator’s body is known as an evaporator. It is the component that is primarily responsible for keeping items cool. In this part of the machine the refrigerant turns from the liquid state to a gaseous state and thus cools the surrounding area.
- Capillary tube
Basically, it is a fine piece of tube that undergoes an expansion mechanism to spread the refrigerant in the liquid state into the low-pressure regions of the evaporators.
This component is responsible for switching on or off the compressor by monitoring the temperature. Whenever the interior of the refrigerator is cool enough, the thermostat switches off the compressor. When it is too hot, the thermostat switches on the compressor that starts the cooling process.
Mainly, two processing cycles were developed for describing the process of refrigeration:
- Vapor Compressor Cycle
- Vapor Absorption Cycle
The process of eradicating heat from a body is considered as refrigeration cycle of operation.

The three main components are:
- There is an evaporator inside the cabinet where the refrigerant boils to changes into vapor and helps in absorption of heat.
- The compressor which put pressure on the refrigerant so that it can get rid of its heat. To enable the compressor to work, it is necessary to have an electric motor to operate the compressor or pump.
- The condenser that helps to discharge the heat.
How do refrigerators work?
Refrigerants are the main components behind the functioning of refrigerators. The mechanism behind the refrigeration process is quite simple.
- When the temperature inside the refrigerator rises above specific points, this alerts the compressor to resume the cooling cycle. The cold refrigerant is incorporated into the unit. The coolant is then subjected to extreme pressure that increases the temperature leading to condensation, and thus it turns into a gas.
- The hot gas generated is transferred towards the condensing coils by the compressor. The already present cold air envelopes the hot gas, and thus its temperature falls, which transforms the gas into a liquid state.
- Now, the cold liquid travels towards the evaporator. The path followed by the liquid is through the coils from the inside of the refrigerators and freezer compartment.
- The hot air present in the refrigerator’s interiors is lowered and brought back to the desired temperature point by the refrigerant.
- Ultimately, the refrigerant evaporates and then turns into a gas. Then it again travels back to the compressor, and thus the cycle restarts.
